Things to Watch and Read

An animated action-buddy comedy in convenient 11 minute bite-sized chunks

Bob the Slob

Bob the Slob lives the life!  He bends the rules, cuts the cheese and hangs with his crew, Elijah and Jonas… oh and when necessary he defeats supervillains using his gross out powers…all while scratching himself in really itchy places.

Bob! and his best buds just want to do the cool stuff kids want to do. The world says no. So, to kick back and chill Bob must use his super slobby powers; Elijah applies her martial arts skills; and Jonas uses his ability to shriek in fear and hide.

Their off-kilter adventures always blast off with a duuuuuude’s simple want. Bob plans to catch the latest zombie movie. Or explore the woods behind the mall. Or Elijah wants to play a game of pickup soccer on an empty lot.  Too bad the movie zombies are real; the woods are infested by vampire realtors and aliens land their mothership on the field. Right in the middle of Jonas’ breakaway. His first shot on goal ever! Man, that so sucks.

So Bob uses his Belch Blast to knock over the zombies.  His Jet Propulsive Fart Flares power him beyond bloodsuckers’ reach.  His Super Snot shoots out and snatches a death ray from an alien’s claw like Spiderman’s web (only greener and stickier

Bob must learn that…

With great grossness comes great responsibility.

Some Recent History: After the pilot aired, we ran a three-day animation bootcamp for eight emerging writers from diverse communities with the kind support of the Shaw Rockett Fund. Two of these writers were invited to join the Bob! The Slob story department and commissioned to write a script each for the show.

Bob! The Slob: Fears of the Clown was a finalist for the WGC Screenwriting Award for best written short.

A young lawyer discovers that he has been cloned 106 times.

106

The Metro. A hard driving young lawyer, Jon Griffin just made partner. Tonight, he plans to propose to his girl. Jon looks up at a security mirror. It is cracked.  Jon sees a hundred shards of himself.  His reflections move with him except...one Jon Reflection stays rock still.  Jon whips around.  He sees the impossible.

Jon’s exact double stands across the tracks. A doppelganger. Jon calls out to him. Shaken, the doppelganger bolts.  Jon pursues him but loses him in the crowd.

From that moment on, Jon’s life is never the same.  Jon always felt he was special, unique. Now he discovers that his life is a lie.  There are dozens of Jon duplicates scattered throughout the world.  Jon is, by definition, replaceable.  Everything he worked so hard for seems like an illusion; like a reflection in a funhouse mirror.  Jon’s professional and personal life falls apart. A one-hour sci fi thriller, 106 follows Jon on his journey to uncover who stole his identity and why.

Some history: There was a slow-motion race between 106 and Orphan Black to see who would get to market and into production first.  Orphan Black won and became a critical success. At one point the network executive who had overseen 106’s development asked if I would consider changing Jon Griffin’s gender to female. I gave it some thought but that would have meant a complete reworking of the main character and his quest. I stuck by my character. It may not have made a difference.

Wyrdwood

Three teens explore the twilight domain of Wyrdwood and decipher the mysteries of the creatures who lurk there, the Wyrds. On their adventures Emily, Connor and Matt uncover dark secrets and darker conspiracies. They fight off supernatural forces. And they will learn more about themselves than they ever expected. If they survive.

This is one of my favorite scripts loosely based on an unpublished novel. I don’t have the rights but the producer does keep trying to get it up on its feet.

Family Biz

For Eli, Avalon and Veronique (Ronnie) Keller life is sweet. Three latchkey kids, they’ve made their house into the neighbourhood social hub. Their folks work long and hard at their careers and the Keller kids like it that way. Teen insanity rules! But then their Dad is downsized. And the Keller kids’ world will never be the same. A self-proclaimed “corporate gunslinger,” Dave Keller now works from home out of his office in the attic. He issues the kids briefcases and business cards. They are now employees of the Keller Family Corporation, a going concern. Dave applies every rule he ever learned in the business world to the business of parenting. Will the Keller kids survive? Will Dave? Too bad the kids can’t just fire Dad.

Some history: We filmed 26 episodes in 73 days in an abandoned Ottawa high school which we shared with the Ottawa bomb squad.  One cop shot himself in the parking lot.  The editing equipment was stolen from the school lobby. I’m not sure how effective the Ottawa police were at the time.

Great cast and team of producers. The series was sold to every territory in the world except the United States and French Canada.  The series bible is linked here and found on the web.

An article about series bibles which includes Family Biz (then known as Dad’s in the Attic).
